And now for something completely different. Would love to know the inspiration behind this one piece carving. Monkey’s are a featured animal in the Zapotec 20 day calendar. Stone carved funerary figures of monkeys have been found in ruins. Not sure what the theme is here. Maybe those are Mata Ortiz pots? Another fresh new addition from masters Mario and Reina. Mario’s superb carving and Reina’s magic touch of the brush really shines on one of three new pieces we just got from them. The painting style has evolved in recent years.
