Samuel Hernandez Cosio is the son of Gonzalo Hernandez, a pioneer of yarn art who learned his trade from Mariano Valadez and the Huichol Center for Cultural Survival. As a student, Samuel learned the value of utilizing the finest threads on the market to create incredibly detailed yarn paintings that reflect his culture’s customs and traditions as well as his own visions from consuming peyote during ceremony. Samuel’s family is originally from the ceremonial center of San Andrés Cohamiata in Jalisco, Mexico.

The images never capture how stunning these are in person. Each is made by pressing thin strands of acrylic yarn into a beeswax foundation spread over a wood board. The symbols within the art have great meaning to the Huichol. Carl Lumholtz, one of the first to study the Huichol, wrote in 1901 – “All sacred things are symbols to primitive man, and the Huichol seem literally to have no end of them. Religion is to them a personal matter, not an institution, and therefore their life is religious – from the cradle to the grave wrapped up in symbolism.“  The price includes shipping to the continental United States.
