This is an extraordinary yarn painting that measures 24″ x 24″. The artist, Luis Castro, comes from one of the most important families in Huichol art. His great-grandfather, Hilario Castro, was a well-respected shaman in the late 1960’s; his grandfather, Daniel Castro, was one of the pioneers of yarn art in the 1970s; and his father is one of the best-recognized yarn artists and recently placed 2nd in the Nayarit State Art competition. Luis is undoubtedly becoming one of the most collected Huichol artists and recently showed his work in the British Museum during their show last fall on Moctezuma, the Aztec Ruler. Luis’ incredible attention to detail and subtle color combinations sincerely set his work above the rest. For him, the skeletons represent his ancestors and pay homage to them and the traditions they left behind by projecting them and making the traditional offerings and ceremonies necessary to appease their gods.
The images never capture how stunning these are in person. Each is made by pressing thin strands of acrylic yarn into a beeswax foundation spread over a wood board. The price includes shipping to the continental United States. Arrives typically in 3 to 5 days and comes with a 100% satisfaction guarantee.
